Does Your Pet Suffer From Dog Arthritis Pain? Canine, or simply dog arthritis has a greater impact on the dog population then you might care to believe. This is as...

Does Your Pet Suffer From Dog Arthritis Pain?

Canine, or simply dog arthritis has a greater impact on the dog population then you might care to believe. This is as common with animals as it is with people. After all the process is pretty much the same. Your dogs eat food that may not be exactly healthy, they age, and at a rate that is considerably faster then humans, and they have different activity levels that will impact their joints and bones to a large degree.

What is canine arthritis?

Arthritis is a basic breakdown of cartilage, which cushions the bones and joints, making any type of physical activity, even walking, much more difficult.

How to spot the symptoms within dogs with arthritis.

Much like humans, when your dog is afflicted with dog arthritis, you should be able to see the common signs. They are the same dog arthritis symptoms that you have yourself experience the human variations in your own bones.

Common symptoms of arthritis in dogs include:

Visible or audible pain triggers when moving, whimpering, yelping,

Favoring a limb

Difficulty sitting or standing

Sleeping more

Seeming to have stiff or sore joints

Hesitancy to jump, run or climb stairs

Weight gain

Decreased activity or less interest in play

Attitude or behavior changes

Being less alert

All of these could be significant indicators that your dog is suffering from canine arthritis in some form or another. Such problems as hip dysplasia owe their root causes to arthritic conditions. These include bone and cartilage deterioration.

Arthritis in dogs greatly reduces their playfulness and can become very painful over time.

What can you do to prevent dog arthritis?

Prevention is almost never truly an option. It is one of those issues where you can do everything right and still have all the symptoms of arthritic pain.

There are a handful of things that can be done to help your pet.

First, take into account the immediacy of this problem. if your dog seems to have any of these symptoms for more than two weeks take him to your veterinarian for an arthritis evaluation, which will involve a physical exam and possibly X-rays. The best thing to do for your dog in managing his arthritis is to get a diagnosis and start a treatment plan as soon as possible.

While there is no one cure for dog arthritis, your vet will likely start your dog off with a canine glucosimine tablet or similar product, a healthy dog diet to follow, additional exercise, or a combination of all three. Glucosime can also be found in many newer treats and foods as well. Your vet may also suggest these alternatives if your pets has isues with eating pills. Some dogs just know medicines it seems and won’t even eat these tablets.

The best way to prevent arthritis is to make sure your dog does get become overweight. Make sure your dog gets regular exercise, by taking the dog for a walk, or letting the dog run around in the back yard. Do not overfeed the dog, and make sure the dog does not eat any scraps from the table. The heavier the dog, the more pressure on the cartilage and joints, and the more likely your dog will be suffering from dog arthritis pain.

Your pet will tell you when they are suffering from dog arthritis symptoms.

Just remember the common arthritic symptoms in dogs list from above and you should have little trouble spotting the warning signs. To recap: the major dog arthritis symptoms are: limping, crying, yapping, and moving at a slow speed. If your dog has one ore more of these symptoms, be sure to take your dog to the vet right away. your vet will make recommendation to either your pets lifestyle or eating habits. Some medication might be needed.

Once you get treatment for your dog arthritis conditions you will begin to notice a considerable improvement in your pets mood, behavior and activity as they return to normal operations.

We all know what medicines are, but pet medicines can be quite difference as compared to their human counterparts. Pet medications will generally vary considerably in the doages and potential effect they will have on your pet.

Some pet medicines are exactly the same medications you might take, while other human versions may be toxic or poisonous to your pet. When it comes to providing pet medicines to your dog or cat, make sure you check with your veterinarian to verify that it is safe for your pet.

As a pet owner myself I was quickly surprised when one of my loverly German Shepherds broke his leg playing frisbee. A simply jump and split second wrong landing caused him to wince in pain as he broke his hind leg upon landing. Immediately he was rushed to the vet, where multiple tests and x-rays started the pricey outcome of that errant frisbee toss.

Eight week laters, after a major “sports related surgery”, (meaning specialist veterinary surgeon was required), multiple follow-up visits, dozens of casts (which Axel continuously chewed through), the total for this one day of play cost over $4000 dollars, and likey was actually higher if I was to account for time, medications, store bought anti-chew collars and anything else.

All of this expense came out of my own pocket, which for a loved pet, more like family, is money well spent. However, much like insuring our own health, these costs could have been lessened if I had considered planning ahead and buying pet health insurance.

If we think that pets need to be maintained as only status symbols and we do not need to invest any extra money on them other than for their food and regular immunity shots, then we are terribly mistaken. Pets are as much as any other important member of the family and their health too needs equal attention.

If you truly love your pet, and presuming that it is a dog, then you will surely want that it should enjoy good health as long as it lives and get the best possible medical care in the event of any sickness. Today, your pets may be enjoying best of health, but there may come a time when they need protracted medical treatment, then a health insurance policy in their favor will be very handy and cost saving, which would be one way of saving money on pet health care.

At the same time, give utmost attention to keeping your dog clean and be conversant with every type of canine health issues and dog illness symptoms too. If you are not sure about where to get pet insurance, the internet is place to search for them. Go to a pet health insurance comparison site and choose the company which meets you requirements and budget. This way, you shall be able to get good coverage at a viable cost to ensure the good health of your ever faithful friend.

Pet insurance is not new. While there are some companies that may not offer it, it is available. Consider checking with your local agents to see if they offer it. Much like your own insurance the cost is a “in case something bad happens” protective blanket. No one ever wantsa their beloved pets to get hurt, but it can and does happen.

If you have a dog that is outside in the snow so often thet it makes sense to buy then a sled dog harness to wear, then you can likely skip this post.

But, if your like most dog owners, you pet goes in and out dozens of times a day. And the winter months are little different, but there are differences that need to be addressed.

Many people will get their pets sweaters, coats and stuff to keep them warm, but one consideration is to get doggy boots. While many dogs are not going to be outside long enough for their pads to get frostbite, it can happen. Even to dogs which are considered to be “cold weather dogs” such as Malamutes, Huskies and Shepherds.

But the cold might not be the biggest problem your pets feet face during the winter. That problems is Salt.

That stuff you are spreading all over your walk so that you don’t fall on your ass, is actually capable of burning the pads of your dogs feet. The salt gets caught within their toes and nails and can dry out and crack the pads. This can cause serious discomfort and pain to your pooch.

The first sign of this is often your dog holding their paw up without any noticable injury. If it happens while they are standing at the door, where you just salted, the greater this is the case. Not all salt and ice melts are pet friendly. There are several on the market that are, but they can be fairly expensive as well.

The main thing you should do is to clean your pets feet off when coming into the house. They will lick them clean, in which case the salt will likely be digested. Alsonot good for them. This is not your average table salt, but course rock salt.

Keep an eye on your pets feet this and every winter to make sure they are not suffering from the cold more then you might realize.

I do not think I have ever met a dog that did not like to play outside in some manner, at some time of year, or with at least one toy. However, we must be careful to watch how our pets play with these toys in order to help prevent the risk of injury.

Our male German shepherd broke his rear ankle a few months ago, simply because he landed wrong when he caught a frisbee. This was heart-breaking for me, but it does show that injuries can and do happen when we least expect them.

In his case, Axel, liked to jump up as high as he could to intercept anything thrown directly over his head. This is what led him to jump too high and then land too hard. Anything that is thrown in front of him he will simply chase after and catch. But he does this without jumping.

Our female, Abie, will chase a tennis ball for hours. However she can run faster then the ball tends to roll once it hits the ground. It only takes a moment to notice that she is trying to “scoop” the ball into her mouth at full speed. What would happen in the event her jaw hits the ground? Or she trips and falls over at a pretty fast speed? I try not to think about it. It’s already bad enough she had surgery for a stick that jammed under her tongue from the two playing with it.

While we love to play with our dogs, we can play with them safely. Make sure to watch what they do when you play with them. Watch their running habits, patterns, and how they catch or grab the toys. If you have more then one dog, try using two tennis balls, one for each dog. One chases the first, the other the second. This prevents them from colliding, and fighting over a single ball. Make sure you watch for obstacles. Don’t through the ball right past a tree that they can run into.

It only takes a little effort on your part, and your pet will not notice that you’re paying attention to those things. It will however help you to prevent potential bad injuries to your loved pet.

Pet odor can be a formidable adversary. You never know when your pet might have an accident, and many times you are unable to locate the spot, either because you can’t find it or are unable to get to it in order to remove, clean, and neutralize it.

Using an air purifier for pet odor lets you stay ahead of the embarrassing smells that can result from inappropriate elimination, and here are 5 features an air purifier must have it if it to be effective.

Variable Fan Speed-Being able to control the rate of filtration is important. On days with a normal routine, the lowest filtration rate will probably still be effective. But on days when one mistake or multiple mistakes occur, you may need to increase the rate of filtration. A cleaner that allows you to adjust the rate at which the air is cleaned is a smart choice and gives you the most options for keeping air quality high.

Split Capacitor Motor-This type of motor is designed to run 24 hours a day safely and effectively. Being able to have the air cleaned continually is the best way to keep odor under control. And not having to remember to cut the purifier on and off because of safety reasons is a great convenience. Having the purifier on continuously eliminates surges of power use, saves energy and money, and assures that your smells fresh and clean regardless of what has happened there while you were away.

Effective Filter for Odor-Make sure it has a filter that is specifically designed for odor removal, and more specifically for removal of pet urine odor. This means you’re covered for whatever kind of odor your pet produces. And should you decide to increase the number of pets you have, your air quality does not need to suffer because of it.

Flexible Placement-Your purifier should be able to take a back seat to your home decor by needing only a few inches of clearance from any wall. Avoid cleaners that must be placed in the center of the room to operate effectively. This flexibility is important because it allows you to use your floor space as you choose.

HEPA Filter-Even though you are probably most interested in removing odor, airborne pet hair and dander are probably also concerns. Having one of the filters in your cleaner be a HEPA filter means that it will remove airborne particulates such as hair and dander down to .3 microns. This means you can effectively remove both odors and particles from the air with one cleaner rather than having to purchase multiple cleaners. This saves money and space.

The added bonus of this type of filtration is that not only will it eliminate pet related particulates, but normal household particles that are airborne such as dust, dust mites, mold and mildew spores, bacteria and viruses. This type of filter makes your home a healthier place for both you and your pets.

————————

Did you know your dog has a greater than 1 in 2 chance of developing cancer?

Just doing what dogs do, by playing, relaxing and rolling around in their own backyard could be dangerous or even life threatening? Regardless if the area is fenced in and seemingly safe from danger, you would be surprised at what may be hiding, ready to hurt or even kill your lovable canine companion. Canine cancer is the number one killer today of our beloved pets.

Your backyard may be a dog’s paradise, but the area can be filled with deadly dangers, especially if you have a puppy that is young, adventurous, and going through that oral fixation phase where he must chew on anything he can find. Cancer in dogs is prevalent today and sometimes this can be due to environmental issues.

The worst age bracket for this problem is between 1 and 6 months, however, other types of dogs, such as Labrador retrievers as a prime example, seem to carry this chewing habit with them for the rest of their lives. I have two Labs, Lady and Lola and they are both grown girls, but love digging and eating backyard dirt.

My vet says it is harmless as long as I don’t use chemical fertilizers or weed killers and other toxic filled products on my grass or around the garden beds.

Beware Of The Following Backyard Dangers

As a busy dog owner, you may not have the time or the resources to properly research many aspects of raising an adult dog or puppy, therefore, below is a list of the most common dangers may be that lurking in your backyard.

This list is compiled from reports as outlined by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCS).

* Fertilizers and compost piles.
* Ornamental ponds that contain blue-green algae.
* Toxins created by animals such as insects, toads, spiders, scorpions, and snakes.
* Poison from citronella candles which are used to guard against mosquitoes.
* Swimming pool supplies and treatment chemicals.
* Mulch that contains Cocoa, which are typically placed around shrubs and other plants.
* Fly traps which contain methomyl.
* Poisonous plants like grape vines, azalea, castor bean, sago palm, and kalanchoe.
* Snail and slug traps which contain metaldehyde.

Also be aware of the same indoor toxic chemicals, and puppy proof this area also as these products are also cancer causing. Close garbage cans tightly. Lock up all pool supplies. Put away your lawn and garden materials.

Further protect your animals by following the instructions carefully given on pesticide products, fertilizers, bug sprays, and other hazardous materials. I have actually replaced all my chemical, poisonous toxic filled products with more natural, earth friendly products. This was initially for my dog’s health, but I do feel much better also about assisting in environmental care. Ask a specialist in lawn care, or check out all the newer choices at your local store that sells lawn care products for earth friendly products.

And if you ever suspect that your dog or puppy has ingested a dangerous poison, chemical, or is bitten by a venomous predator, contact your veterinarian or get him to your nearest emergency veterinarian hospital immediately.

The increase of canine cancer in the last 20 years can be caused by the increase in use of toxic outdoor dangers.

There are also many other ways to help reduce the chance of your dog getting cancer. Starting with being aware of what is dangerous and could potentially cause dog cancer is the first step in raising healthy happy pets.

————————

I am an animal lover and advocate of raising healthy, happy pets, as part of the family. I truly believe this starts with proper, adequate nutrition, which in turn extends your pets life.

There is nothing better to a dog owner than to see his furry friend healthy and happy. One reason for the transformation of your pooch from happy to sad is due to annoying dog scratching. Dogs don’t like uncomfortable. They scratch and scratch once that itchy feeling comes their way. Dog scratching is something a loving dog owner must address. It causes stress and trauma to your dog, especially when dog cuts come about. The itchy feeling makes your dog scratch, not being aware that the problem is getting worse. Of course, the only thing your furry friend is thinking is, “Get rid of this irritating itch!”.

Causes

A dog may appear active and playful, and yet be feeling very sore. There are numerous reasons for the annoying dog scratching problem. It is likely because they have a specific skin issue, such as dermatitis.

Dermatitis can be environmental, nutritional, parasitic, infectious or bacterial. Now, what the dog owner must first do is to contact a vet. As soon as it’s noticed, the “dog scratching” problem must be given your full attention, as it may cause serious long-term skin problems if not dealt with early. A dog owner must work hand in hand with his vet, taking the full responsibility of relaying all the necessary information about his dog. With the owner’s cooperation, the vet would be able to identify the possible causes.

Solution

As soon as the cause of the dog scratching is identified, the dog must be treated immediately. Of course, depending on the specific cause, the owner must make changes in order for the skin problem to fully heal. For instance, dog scratching problems can happen to dogs that are allergic to lawn grass (strange but true).

You may also want to consider products that specialize in treating dog scratching. There are many out there but the most effective one I’ve ever seen contains the Mayan traditional herb Tepezcohuite. (In fact, I was so impressed with its natural abilities that I created an all-natural dog balm called K9 KlearUp around this compound – www.k9klearup.com. It’s guaranteed to help clear up the 17 most common canine skin and coat problems).

So there you have it, some simple solutions to help get rid of annoying dog scratching. Your dog will be wagging his tail again in no time!
