Canine, or simply dog arthritis has a greater impact on the dog population then you might care to believe. This is as common with animals as it is with people. After all the process is pretty much the same. First, take into account the immediacy of this problem. if your dog seems to have any of these symptoms for more than two weeks take him to your veterinarian for an arthritis evaluation, which will involve a physical exam and possibly X-rays. The best thing to do for your dog in managing his arthritis is to get a diagnosis and start a treatment plan as soon as possible.

While there is no one cure for dog arthritis, your vet will likely start your dog off with a canine glucosimine tablet or similar product, a healthy dog diet to follow, additional exercise, or a combination of all three. Glucosime can also be found in many newer treats and foods as well. Your vet may also suggest these alternatives if your pets has isues with eating pills. Some dogs just know medicines it seems and won’t even eat these tablets.

The best way to prevent arthritis is to make sure your dog does get become overweight. Make sure your dog gets regular exercise, by taking the dog for a walk, or letting the dog run around in the back yard. Do not overfeed the dog, and make sure the dog does not eat any scraps from the table. The heavier the dog, the more pressure on the cartilage and joints, and the more likely your dog will be suffering from dog arthritis pain.

Just remember the common arthritic symptoms in dogs list from above and you should have little trouble spotting the warning signs. To recap: the major dog arthritis  symptoms are: limping, crying, yapping, and moving at a slow speed. If your dog has one ore more of these symptoms, be sure to take your dog to the vet right away. your vet will make recommendation to either your pets lifestyle or eating habits. Some medication might be needed.

Once you get treatment for your dog arthritis conditions you will begin to notice a considerable improvement in your pets mood, behavior and activity as they return to normal operations.

Eight week laters, after a major “sports related surgery”, (meaning specialist veterinary surgeon was required), multiple follow-up visits, dozens of casts (which Axel continuously chewed through), the total for this one day of play cost over $4000 dollars, and likey was actually higher if I was to account for time, medications, store bought anti-chew collars and anything else.

But, if your like most dog owners, you pet goes in and out dozens of times a day. And the winter months are little different, but there are differences that need to be addressed.

Many people will get their pets sweaters, coats and stuff to keep them warm, but one consideration is to get doggy boots. While many dogs are not going to be outside long enough for their pads to get frostbite, it can happen. Even to dogs which are considered to be “cold weather dogs” such as Malamutes, Huskies and Shepherds.

But the cold might not be the biggest problem your pets feet face during the winter. That problems is Salt.

Our male German shepherd broke his rear ankle a few months ago, simply because he landed wrong when he caught a frisbee. This was heart-breaking for me, but it does show that injuries can and do happen when we least expect them.

In his case, Axel, liked to jump up as high as he could to intercept anything thrown directly over his head. This is what led him to jump too high and then land too hard. Anything that is thrown in front of him he will simply chase after and catch. But he does this without jumping.

Our female, Abie, will chase a tennis ball for hours. However she can run faster then the ball tends to roll once it hits the ground. It only takes a moment to notice that she is trying to “scoop” the ball into her mouth at full speed.  What would happen in the event her jaw hits the ground? Or she trips and falls over at a pretty fast speed? I try not to think about it. It’s already bad enough she had surgery for a stick that jammed under her tongue from the two playing with it. 

While we love to play with our dogs, we can play with them safely. Make sure to watch what they do when you play with them. Watch their running habits, patterns, and how they catch or grab the toys. If you have more then one dog, try using  two tennis balls, one for each dog. One chases the first, the other the second. This prevents them from colliding, and fighting over a single ball. Make sure you watch for obstacles. Don’t through the ball right past a tree that they can run into.

 It only takes a little effort on your part, and your pet will not notice that you’re paying attention to those things. It will however help you to prevent potential bad injuries to your loved pet.

Just doing what dogs do, by playing, relaxing and rolling around in their own backyard could be dangerous or even life threatening? A dog may appear active and playful, and yet be feeling very sore. There are numerous reasons for the annoying dog scratching problem. It is likely because they have a specific skin issue, such as dermatitis.
