Beware Of Unseen Playtime Hazards

One thing that you simply cannot always account for with a pet is the unknown. If you have been reading our sites for some time now, then you may remember that Axel, our male German Shepherd broke his ankle hock playing Frisbee a few month ago.

Well this past weekend while outside getting firewood, the dogs enjoyed their favorite activity, running around in the snow. They will pester me all day long while I am outside to throw something for them to chase. This past Saturday was no exception. So I took a small stick, tossed it to the other end of the yard, and off they went.

Suddenly Axel yelped and I thought “oh no not again”, as I saw him limping.

What happened? Well he decided to run a little too close to the outdoor fire pit. When he did, he clipped his leg on the side of the fire pit wall. This would be the general equivalent of you or I taking a corner too quickly and walking into corner of the wall. Only he was running.

It happens and it can happen in a split second.

He was excited to get to the stick. So much so that he basically ran himself into a wall to try to beat Abie to it.

I was extremely happy to learn there was no damage and that he did not re-injure his leg. He was sore for a day or two and did lose a small tuft of fur where he now has a scratch. But otherwise he is ok.

This is the unknown factor that you must always be on the lookout for. Knowing that Axel is extremely reactionary to thrown items, I now make sure to throw more to open areas and to throw low so he cannot jump to high. (that’s how he broke his leg in the first place)

One of the biggest steps you can take to avoiding pet injury is to know your pet’s habits and adjust to compensate for them.
